The Day of Georgian Language
14/04/2012
The day of Georgian language is celebrated in Georgia on April 14. 34 years ago the Soviet government decided to deprive local languages of national statuses in soviet republics. As per the decision, just the Russian language was to be remained as a national language.
The relevant amendment was to be made to the Georgian soviet constitution on April 14, 1978. However, thousands of people took to streets in Tbilisi on that day to protest against this decision. The main part of demonstrators was young students.
Analogical process took place in Batumi, Adjara region, too. After escalation of the situation the soviet government had just two choices: bloodshed or concession. Official Moscow was forced to concede and not to make amendment to the constitution.
14th of April was declared as a Georgian Language Day. Traditionally, each year, on April 14, the various events are held near the Mother Language Monument.
