Today the Orthodox Church marks the Forgiveness Sunday. In this regard, the Catholicos-Patriarch of All Georgia, the Archbishop of Mtskheta and Tbilisi, and the Metropolitan of Bichvinta and Tskhum-Abkhazia, His Holiness and Beatitude Ilia II will hold the service at the Cathedral of the Holy Trinity.
Since February 27, begins the Lent, which ends on April 15, Easter. The longest fast begins with the Forgiveness Sunday. This is the first step in Lent, and on that day the believers have the custom to ask for forgiveness to each other for all the visible and invisible insults.
On this day at the Sermon is read the Gospel, which says to forgive insults to neighbors, without which we can’t obtain forgiveness of the sins and the gathering of heavenly treasures.
The Church reminds us the expulsion of Adam and Eve from Paradise for their disobedience and intemperance. On this day, after the evening worship, in churches is performed a special rite of forgiveness, when the clergy and parishioners are mutually seek each other's forgiveness, to enter into Lent with a clean heart, reconciled with all the neighbors. That is why this day is called the Forgiveness Sunday.
