On 3th of November, in Samtredia was opened the first cathedral. The festive liturgy was held by the Catholicos-Patriarch of All Georgia, the Archbishop of Mtskheta and Tbilisi, the Metropolitan Bichvinta and Tskhum-Abkhazia, His Holiness and Beatitude Ilia II. Prior to the prayer, the cathedral was consecrated by the Metropolitan of Khoni-Samtredia Saba. The first liturgy was attended by many people. The foundation for the construction of the Cathedral of the Holy King David the Builder was established in 1990. Several years ago, the foundation of the cathedral was consecrated by the Catholicos-Patriarch. The whole diocese was actively participating in the construction of the cathedral. Stones for the construction of the cathedral were brought from all over Georgia.

After the festive liturgy, the Catholicos-Patriarch of All Georgia, His Holiness and Beatitude Ilia II, has congratulated the parishioners and awarded several clerics from the Khoni-Samtredia diocese. In addition to the consecration of the cathedral, the whole diocese was celebrating another important date – in 1995, after almost 200 years, with the blessing of the Catholicos-Patriarch, was restored the abolished in 19 century diocese of Khoni-Samtredia.
