Rehabilitation of the Svetitskhoveli Cathedral
27/08/2011
For more than three centuries the Svetitskhoveli cathedral is decorated with a cross, which was allegedly erected by King Irakli II. Over time, the cross was badly damaged. Several weeks ago, a cross was removed from the dome and above was carried out the restoration work. Today, the cross was returned to his seat.
Prior to the erection of a cross on the dome of the temple, it was consecrated by Archimandrite Seraphim. Restoration work took 10 days. The shrine was first cleaned and then coated with gold. The cross on the dome was uplifted by hands. Restorers believe that this cross was erected by King Irakli II.
Restoration of the Cathedral of the Cross is part of the project, which more than a year is carried out by the National Agency of Cultural Heritage Protection. This restoration work in the cathedral of Mtskheta is not yet fully completed. In September, the experts from UNESCO, together with the Georgian specialists will start work on the conservation of unique ornaments of the cathedral.
