Homily of His Holiness and Beatitude, the Catholicos-Patriarch of All Georgia, Ilia II on Nativity Day of St. John the Baptist.
07/07/2011
I want to remind you that yesterday and the day before there was the general excitement due to the adoption of law on the status of religious organizations. Of course, I and the Georgian Patriarchy also expressed the views. But this law is so important and dangerous that lawmakers should have thought about the consequences that may happen in ten or one hundred years later. I always note that we lack the skills of analytical thinking. The analysis should take place not after, but before the performance, considering all the consequences that might follow it. You already know the words of my performance and you know about the statement of the Patriarchate. There is nothing unusual. We do not claim that to the religions that exist in Georgia should not be given the status, but we say that we should invite experts, scientists, religious leaders and discuss the issue without haste. Unfortunately, our legislators are so rushed that they took the law in a day.
My speech to the Government and people, not in any way includes even a word against the Armenians. Despite various discussions, the Georgians and Armenians have been and remain the brotherly peoples. This is necessary. When there were difficult times for the Armenians, we always helped them. In difficult times to Georgians, Armenians always help us. I said that the new law is so complex and responsible that it can be used improperly, for evil. Therefore, legislators should take into account everything. The church must also participate in the discussion of this issue, because in many cases, this question applies to both church and state. Some say that the church interferes in the affairs of state. But it's not only the public issue, it’s the issue of all our people, church, and especially the state. This process, which was the subject of yesterday's discussions already, strained relations between the religions. This is not acceptable. The Georgian people have always been a supporter of other small nations. The Georgians have always defended the Armenian, Russian, Azeri, Jewish people ... The Jewish people themselves say that Georgia is the only country in the world, where there was not anti-Semitism. I recall the last period of the Soviet Union. I was visited by arrived in Georgia group of young Jewish students who told me, that in Moscow began anti-Semite performances. I told them that if there is a danger, they may arrive in Georgia and that our door is always opened to them. Thanks God, there did not happen anything containing a risk to them.
That is why I want to ask our president to use the veto right until the bill will not be reviewed and revised. The main responsibility still lies with the president, and I wish peace to our president and our country.
I hope all is well.
God bless you!
May God bless our country!
May God bless our church!
God is with us!
And because God is with us, then who would do us harm?
