06/05/2015
On May 6, the Orthodox Church celebrates St. Georges Day. The festive liturgy will take place in all Orthodox churches. This day especially will be celebrated in the churches of St. George.
The Great-Martyr, who was born in the early third century in Cappadocia, is especially beloved by the Georgian people. In Georgia, in the name of St. George are erected many churches, created many murals and icons with his image. This is not only a tribute of respect and love of the Georgian people to St. George, but the whole history of Georgia.
St. George served as the military commander in the court of the Roman emperor Diocletian. When the emperor decided to persecute the Christians, St. George refused to serve the emperor and rebelled against the action of Diocletian. That led to his arrest. St. George was first lashed by whips, wounded by the sword and crucified on a wheel, but his wounds were healed in a miraculous way. It is exactly the crucifixion day of St. George on the wheel what is marked on November 23. St. George died by martyrs death in 305 year. By order of the emperor Diocletian he was beheaded. The day of St. Georges beheading is marked on 6th of May.
