The Entrance of the Theotokos

The Entrance into the Temple of Our Most Holy Lady the Theotokos

04/12/2014

Today, the Orthodox Church celebrates the Entrance into the Temple of Our Most Holy Lady the Theotokos and Ever-Virgin Mary. This holiday is very important for Christians because it is the beginning of the greatest mystery hidden for centuries - arrival of the Messiah in human form. In all Orthodox churches in this day are executed the hymns announcing the proximity of Christmas.

Saint Joachim and Saint Anne spent 50 years childless. Because of this, they have undergone a lot of ridicule and abuse. Saint Anne with a prayer to the Lord promised that if he gives them a child, she will bring it as a gift to the Lord. God heeded supplications of Saint Anna and she was presented the Archangel Gabriel who told her, that she would have a daughter Mary, who will become the mother of the Savior. Parents of Our Holy Lady led their only daughter to the Holy Temple of Jerusalem as soon she became three years old. Among the Jewish people there was a tradition according to which the virgins and widows, who made a vow of serving the Lord, lived together in the church. Among them was settled the Virgin Mary. On their way to the temple, St. Joachim and Anna were met by clergy. The staircase, which led to the temple, consisted of 15 steps. St. Anne seated the Holy Virgin Mary on the first step of the stairs. The Virgin Mary without any aid has risen to the remaining steps and entered the church.. The high priest brought her into the most sacred place in the church where not only women, but also clergy had no right to enter. Only the high priest had the right to enter into this holy place during on holy days. Rejoicing the execution of his promise to the Lord, the St. Joachim and Anna returned to home - in the small town of Nazareth which was located on distance of three-day journey from Jerusalem, and continued their life in solitude. Despite the loneliness, they lived happily since their only daughter served in the temple praising the God.

On the most important day for all Orthodox Christians – the Entry into the Temple of our Most Holy Lady the Theotokos and Ever-Virgin Mary, in all churches of Georgia the morning started with the festive liturgy.
