Statement of the Georgian Patriarchate
08/12/2013
On December 4 this year, due to the Jewish holiday "Hanukkah" at the Liberty Square was put the menorah and on a City Council’s building was posted a congratulatory poster that caused the protest of some Orthodox believers and clergy. Two young men tore the poster and because of this action, they were arrested.
Georgian Orthodox Church is against any violent actions and deem it unacceptable. In addition, under current law, religious organizations have the right to freely express themselves, but at the same time in religious organizations are some people who act in similar situations unduly harsh. Therefore, in such cases, it is necessary to consider the other side of the issue, in particular, inter-religious relations and relations between nations, which are of great value.
The fact, that the Church has made a significant contribution to the prevailing over 26 centuries unique good relations between the Georgian and the Jewish people, because over the centuries the Church has shaped the public thinking.
We think that there is no one to teach us and the Jewish community how to preserve and deepen that relationship.
