Svetitskhovloba
14/10/2013
Today, the Georgian Orthodox Church celebrates the day of the "Heaton of the Lord and the Holy Exuding Miraculous Pillar", known in people as "Svetitskhovloba" (the day of the Svetitskhoveli Cathedral). In this regard, in Svetitskhoveli Cathedral will be held the festive liturgy.
The value of the Svetitskhoveli Cathedral is huge by its history and the relics which are kept in the cathedral. After the crucifixion of our Lord, his robe was brought to Georgia by two members of the Mtskheta Jewish community - Elioz and Longinoz.Bottom of Form Sister of Elioz - Sidonia took the robe in her arms and because of strong feelings she died on the spot. Nobody could release the Lord’s robe from the hands of the deceased, so, it was buried together with Sidonia. At the grave of Sidonia grew up a big cedar. In the fourth century, during the reign of St. King Mirian and Queen Nana, in place of that cedar was decided to build a temple. However, it was impossible to budge the trunk of a tree from the place. After some time, the inhabitants of Mtskheta saw that the pillar, shining with light, has raised up and stood at a height of 12 cubits. By the prayer of St. Nino, the pillar descended, and returned to its original place. Only after this it became possible to start construction of the temple. At this place was built a small wooden church. At the end of the fifth century, the Holy King Vakhtang Gorgasali began the construction of the bigger basilica. Later, the Holy Patriarch Melkisedek I began the building-restoration of the temple whose construction was begun by St. King Vakhtang Gorgasali. By his order, in the XI century, the architect Arsakidze (Arsukisdze) re-constructed the old basilica into the cross-domed four-pillar church. Exactly this brilliant creation of Arsakidze survived to these days.
The Georgian Orthodox Church on this day also marks the day of commemoration of the Holy King Mirian and Queen Nana.
